Gardman, Britain's leading wild bird care company, has sponsored the shady courtyard garden at the newly opened British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) Nunnery Garden at Thetford, Norfolk. The company has provided both financial support and a range of its products for the high-walled site which is further shaded by large copper beech trees.
Dr Nick Carter, Gardman's Director of Environment and Conservation, and former TV AM presenter and keen conservationist Wincey Willis, were on hand at the official opening of the garden in late June 2008. The shady courtyard garden was used by the previous owners of the site for holding livestock and latterly as the gardeners' bothy. Restoration work continues on the fragile walls of the garden, which has been planted with carefully selected species such as foxglove, cranesbill and ferns, chosen for their ability to thrive in such conditions.
The BTO Nunnery Garden has many other features such as a wildflower meadow, a flowery lawn, herb beds, a pond, a sunny border and a woodland corner. It offers inspiration to those gardeners who wish to increase the value of their own gardens for birds and other wildlife. The garden is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
