Retail shrinkage is on the increase. Crime alone costs businesses billions of pounds every year and as such, retailers are looking for new ways to reduce this. Retail crime cost the UK a staggering £4.1 billion, last year making it the worst country in Europe for theft, according to Checkpoint Systems' Global Retail Theft Barometer (GRTB).
Merchandise theft has recently become far more sophisticated. Thieves are savvier when it comes to outsmarting security systems and well-informed shoplifters are aware of the different means of protection. According to the GRTB report, across Europe, gardening and DIY stores stated the highest levels of shrinkage at 1.75% of turnover.
Historically, however, retailers have reduced their loss prevention budgets during economic slowdowns. But those considering cutting their budgets to save money really should think twice. With incidences of shoplifting already on the up, savings achieved through cutting the loss prevention budget can be quickly surpassed by the cost of this increased theft.
A new generation of loss prevention systems is needed to help retailers better safeguard their merchandise, without disrupting consumer behaviour. These new systems must not only detect theft, help stop merchandise from literally walking out of the door, and actually prevent the attempted theft in the first place. Quality antennae, training, IP CCTV systems and Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) programmes are all ways of helping to ensure shoplifting statistics do not overtake sales figures. If technology is utilised to its full potential, garden centre retailers could save themselves millions of pounds, which will go a long way towards strengthening their market position in these difficult times.
