William Sinclair purchases ‘Gem'
Published:  01 February, 2008

William Sinclair Holdings PLC has announced the acquisition of Joseph Metcalf Ltd who supply the "Gem" brand of horticultural products. William Sinclair is an award winning horticultural business with a turnover of £38m. It has operated in the horticultural market since 1850 and now provides products to the retail and commercial sectors.

The company includes the leading retail brands J. Arthur Bower's and New Horizon. Joseph Metcalf Ltd was established in 1887 and has an annual turnover of £10million. It also serves the commercial and retail sectors of the horticulture market. It is based in Lancashire and was the UK's largest privately owned fertiliser and compost producer prior to this development.

Bernard Burns (CEO, William Sinclair) commented: "This acquisition joins two of the leading historic players in the UK horticultural market. Acquiring Gem allows William Sinclair to create a force for the future. It will increase the products, support and service we can offer our retailers."

The new acquisition allows William Sinclair to use more localised production sources, reducing transportation costs and reducing the carbon impact of deliveries.
