Great techniques for saving water
Published:  30 March, 2009

Saving water in the garden is one of the most important ways we can look after our environment.

Hosepipes and sprinklers are fast becoming things of the past, with new ecofriendly methods now available to water plants, shrubs and lawns. Excess water from the household, such as bath water and that used in washing vegetables for cooking, can be re-used on shrubs and borders, providing it is chemical free.

Outdoors many people are now investing in water butts, which can capture thousands of litres of rainwater every year - which is better for lawns and plants. People using watering cans should use a rose to avoid drenching plants with excess water that will simply try on the surface. Another good tip is to water plants at their base and at a cool part of the day to avoid any evaporation. Recycled landscape chippings, such as Dunweedin', can help plants by retaining moisture in the soil, whilst also creating great looking borders and walkways.
