GCU - May 2009
Published:  12 May, 2009

The sun is shining and retailers are smiling! As GCU went to press, the Met Office announced its predictions for a barbeque summer, with temperatures being warmer than average across the UK. I have spoken to a number of retailers in the last few weeks and the general consensus is that if the sun is shining, people will spend. So despite the recession, retailers should enjoy soaring profits in the summer months.

Inspiring further confidence in the Industry, Westland Horticulture is launching a pioneering range of vegetables and flower seeds under the Unwins brand that it believes will change the face of the market. We caught up with Head of Marketing Keith Nicholson to find out more about the consumer driven focus of the brand (p4). In the second instalment of Garden Centre Spotlight meanwhile, Caroline Owen, Managing Director of Scotsdale Garden Centre takes the time to talk us through the business. While in GIMA Voice, Neil Gow explains the history of the humble growbag and the ‘grow your own' phenomenon sweeping the UK (p13), highlighting a plethora of opportunities for linked sales.

Enjoy!
