CJ Wildlife creates homes this nesting season ...
Published:  01 January, 2008

CJ WildBird Foods is Europe's leading supplier of quality bird food and feeding products, and also manufactures feeders, nest boxes, bird tables and feeding accessories. The company was founded in 1987 and now employs around 200 people at its base near Shrewsbury and branches in Europe.

Species of birds such as the House Sparrow were once seen in every garden in every town, but in recent years this familiar sight has been gradually disappearing. A shortage of natural nest sites is thought to be one of the major factors behind their decline. Shrinking woodland area, modern farming practices and suburban garden makeovers have led to a significant reduction in suitable housing for, amongst others, Sparrows, Blackbirds, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Robins and Wrens.

One way in which we can help is to put up nesting boxes in gardens and give our native birds a home to bring up their young ... and in return we can enjoy the antics of wild birds feeding their families and fledglings taking their first flights.

Nest boxes replicate birds' natural nesting preferences and simulate the types of cavities birds prefer, providing refuge for many different species. CJ Wildlife produce hole entrance boxes, which are designed to imitate a naturally occurring cavity such as the kind you might find in a tree trunk. They also produce open fronted nest boxes, which are designed to appeal to birds that would nest on a ledge or open cavity such as among the roots of a fallen tree.

The CJ Wildlife range of nest boxes are an unusual and thoughtful gift idea, and have a number of key features to give added value.

  • All our boxes have been designed by Ornithologists and meet the requirements of the birds in terms of optimum dimensions.
  • The boxes are easy to put up and clean and can be used in most habitats.
  • Our wooden boxes meet the important FSC* standard for sustainability. Sales of these products help CJ Wildlife support the RSPCA and RHS - two of the UK's largest charities
Our best selling lines include:

The Nest Gift Box Pack - which contains a nest box that attracts Nuthatches, House Sparrows & Great Tits; plus a full colour ID poster to help identify and care for garden visitors.

The Robin & Wren Nest Box - this box has a unique backless design, specifically for Britain's favourite birds; the Robin and Wren.

February the 14th sees the start of National Nest Box Week. The aim of the week is to raise awareness of the need for more nesting sites; and to encourage everyone to put up nest boxes to help our breeding birds and other wildlife. National Nest Box Week was launched in 1997, and since then thousands of enthusiastic naturalists across the UK have put up boxes. It is estimated that there are now five to six million boxes in gardens across the UK.

CJ Wildlife are avid supporters of National Nest box week, and hope that they can help to raise the profile of our British birds' plight in their search for homes this spring.
