Calling all Young Garden Designers
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) in association with the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) have started the search for the 2012 National Young Designer of the Year.
Published:  09 December, 2011

The Societies have joined forces for 2012 to bring the competition to aspiring designers across the country. The competition, now in its third year, is open to all designers and students, aged 28 and younger. The most talented three designers will be picked to build their garden at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park 2012.

Show Manager, Kris Hulewicz, says: “The RHS is committed to promoting gardening and horticulture to young people as a career to be proud of. The Young Designer of the Year category gives young designers a platform from which to showcase their designs and launch their career to an audience of over 90,000 people. They will also benefit from the national and regional media coverage RHS Flower Show Tatton Park attracts.” Chair of the SGD, Annabel Downs, says: “We are delighted to be working with the RHS in this area to support young design talent. The competition is a fabulous opportunity for aspiring garden designers to compete alongside their future contemporaries. I urge every young garden designer to sharpen their pencils and pitch in immediately - there is absolutely no time to waste!”

The 2011 winner, Daniela Coray, says: “The competition had a major impact on my work, and has given me the confidence to pursue the career I've been working towards.   I am currently working on two commissions both of which came off the back of Tatton. I'm also completing my Master's degree which has been greatly influenced by my Tatton garden.  All around, it was a brilliant experience across all stages, from the design, to planning and building. It was incredibly rewarding to work with my team of volunteers, and to achieve such a fantastic result made the whole process that much sweeter.”

The three finalists who will be announced at the 2012 RHS Chelsea Flower Show will receive an RHS grant of £12,000 towards the total cost of their garden budget.

The deadline for design submissions is the 6 January 2012. For more information or an application pack please email exhibitorapplications@rhs.org.uk. Application packs can be downloaded online at www.rhs.org.uk/tpyd2511
