Which? Gardening has declared Vital Earth’s multipurpose and tub & basket compost, which are made from recycled garden waste, as Best Buys, the first time environmentally-friendly peat-free composts have outperformed peat-based competitors. This is not only great news for Vital Earth, whose compost and fertiliser products are all 100% natural, 100% recycled, and 100% UK-sourced, it is also great news for garden retailers. For Vital Earth has over thirty other compost products in its range including specialist blends like peat-free ericaceous compost for lime haters, peat-free John Innes composts, and specific purpose products like vegetable compost, planters and the Kayak growbag, so-called because of its innovative boat-like shape.
So, while most gardeners now know to look for peat-free (because peat extraction damages peatland habitat and releases harmful CO2 into the environment), nevertheless it’s still true that not all composts and fertilisers are the same – even the peat-free ones!
For a truly green and sustainable compost offer, you need peat-free that is recycled, UK sourced and totally natural. The Vital Earth peat-free range is derived from garden waste - last season’s plants, grass cuttings and hedge clippings, together with some forestry by-products and extra nitrogen from food grade nutrient sources – making a nutrient-rich product. The process is fully computer-controlled and protected from the elements, so Vital Earth’s range is completely sanitised and free from weed seeds, pathogens and any form of contamination. The products are very productive, smell just like any compost and are lighter to carry! They also stay fresh and ready for use throughout the season.
Recycling like this also means 90,000 tonnes of garden waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill, is reused, reducing carbon and methane emissions!
Vital Earth Multipurpose has high levels of humates and nutrients providing a reserve of water reducing the need to feed and encouraging sustained growth. A 60 litre bag has an rrp of £5.99. Vegetable Compost also has high levels of humates: natural biostimulants which provide a reserve of water and nutrients and stimulate robust growth. It comes in 60 litre and 25 litre packs with rrps of £5.99 and £3.99 respectively. For tomatoes and other salads, the Kayak growbag’s unique shape provides a reservoir to hold water more efficiently, aid absorption and provide for deeper root growth. The large reserves of potash in the compost are particularly good at boosting flavour. Vital Earth’s Kayak is a 30 litre size and has an rrp of £2.99. As an alternative the slightly larger Vital Earth Planter is a 50 litre size and has a rrp of £4.49. Other specialist composts from Vital Earth like ericaceous and John Innes No 1, No 2 and No 3 come in 60 litre and 25 litre for ericaceous with rrps of £5.99 and £3.49 and for John Innes 25 litre and ten litre at rrps of £3.99 and £3.49 respectively.
There’s also a great new fertiliser from Vital Earth, which uses a recycled version of the chicken manure that experienced gardeners ‘swear by’ for prize-winning home grown veg. It’s called Chicken PooTM and it’s sourced from free range British hens! The product is supplied in tub form for easy use and storage and comes in a 7KG size with an rrp of £7.99.
