Donations to Greenfingers’ ‘Turn Old into Gold’ scheme were auctioned off earlier this month and have raised over £2,300 – the charity is now urging other suppliers to donate unwanted stock.
At the beginning of June, Greenfingers auctioned off generous donations from Wyevale Nurseries, Wyevale Garden Centres and The Scotts Company at auctioneers W & H Peacocks in Bedford.
The donations from Wyevale Nurseries included all the plants used in Wyevale Garden Centres awarding-winning garden from this year’s RHS Malvern Spring Garden Show – which won a Gold Medal and the prestigious Best Garden in Show award.
This donation raised over £1,000 with David Mitchell, plant buyer at Wyevale Garden Centres, saying: “We were delighted to win a prestigious RHS Gold Medal and Best in Show Award at the recent Malvern Spring Show. This wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding quality of plants provided by Wyevale Nurseries and other key suppliers so when we heard about Greenfingers’ campaign to auction off plants to raise money it seemed the perfect home for our show plants.”
The Scotts Company has been donating one pallet of unwanted stock per month which is being regularly auctioned off. The company’s latest donation of various lawn and plant products raised £1,325 at the same auction.
Greenfingers head of fundraising Linda Petrons is hoping these recent contributions to the scheme – which have raised thousands for the charity at auction – will inspire others with unwanted stock to donate to Turn Old into Gold.

The simple act of getting rid of unwanted or leftover stock and products has a very tangible benefit for us as this recent auction shows. We hope others across the industry will also think of us and give us a call whenever they have unwanted items – don’t forget, your trash is our treasure!”

All funds raised through the Turn Old into Gold scheme will contribute to Greenfingers A Million Moments appeal. The appeal, which launched in July 2015, aims to raise £1 million to help at least a further 5,000 children who spend time in hospices around the UK by giving them the gift of a garden and the chance to spend time outdoors, enjoying the natural world.
