Leading decorative garden structures and fencing company, Grange, is celebrating after its sponsored show garden, “Reflecting Photonics”, was presented with a Gold Award, together with the RHS People’s Choice Best Large Garden Award, at this year’s RHS Flower Show Tatton Park.
The conceptual garden was created by garden designers Helen Elks-Smith and Kate Hart, in conjunction with the University of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), to celebrate the United Nations “International Year of Light” – a theme which ran throughout the whole event. Helen and Kate created the garden to reflect the world-leading research into light-transmitting optical fibre which takes place at the ORC.
The focal point of the entire garden was the Pavilion, the basis of which was a Grange Fencing Carousel Pergola. To create the pavilion the pergola was painted grey and its posts trimmed to give it a sloping roof. An additional larger roof was also added together with optical fibres, creating a stunning light-filled structure.
The pavilion was full of fibre optic glass “drops” which were set into the floor whilst a “wave-form” path lead away from the building reflecting light throughout the garden. The trees and the surrounding planting were in cool colours, building to a vibrant colour spectrum, mirroring the lights of the pavilion.
Paula Sankey, a representative from Grange Fencing, was also on the stand advising visitors on the extensive Grange range as well as the company’s input into the award-winning garden.
Senior Product Manager at Grange, Rob Giles, explained, “We are extremely proud to have been part of such an exciting project and seeing how they have transformed our pergola into a light filled pavilion has been inspirational!
