Want to plant and grow your own veggies?

PEOPLE from Somerset who want to grow their own vegetables this year are invited to a free event at a garden centre in the county this March (2009).

Staff at Sanders GardenWorld at Brent Knoll will be hosting a Grow Your Own Weekend on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29 for anyone interested in finding out how to sow vegetable seeds and grow their own food.

Garden centre General Manager, Peter Burks said: “We hope as many people as possible come along and join us for this informative weekend, which will be dedicated to learning how to successfully grow your own vegetables. Representatives from the Burnham-on-Sea Allotment Association will be attending on both days from 10am until 4pm.

“The allotment representatives will be on hand to help people with choosing seeds, plants and equipment, and will also offer ideas on how to get the very best from your vegetable patch.

They will also explain to people when vegetables are ready to be picked as sometimes this can be confusing.

“For people with smaller gardens staff will be able to give advice on growing vegetables in growbags, tubs and containers too.”

Also during the weekend, there will be free demonstrations and staff will be showing people how to plant potatoes. Sanders GardenWorld predicts grow your own is going to be very popular this year.

Peter added: “From what our customers are telling us they are looking to produce their own vegetables from their allotments, gardens and patios to help with the costs of their food bills during the current economic climate.

“They are also saying to us that they think home-grown produce tastes better and that it is better for the environment, as it’s picked and then eaten at home, so no wasteful packaging or added food miles.”
