Wyevale modernises vehicle fleet

One of the UK’s leading nurseries is continuing to modernise its vehicle fleet with the purchase of another new low emissions lorry.

This will be Wyevale Nurseries’ second rigid vehicle in three years, a total investment of £165,000. The new lorries are to replace older vehicles and are much more fuel efficient.

Steve Pandeli, head of Supply Chain Operations at Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, said: “It’s very important for us to keep our lorry drivers safe, as well as making sure our plants and trees arrive with our customers in a fantastic condition.

“However, we are also looking at how, as a company, we can make changes that will benefit the environment. These new lorries are both powered by engines that meet the Euro 6 diesel emissions standard so will be compliant with the forthcoming introduction of ‘Clean Air Zones’.”

Euro 6 is the sixth and latest directive set by the European Union to help reduce the level of harmful pollutants produced by new vehicles. Pollutants include nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate matter, which is soot from diesel vehicles.

Pandeli added: “The new vehicles are Rigid Curtainsiders with tail lifts for ease of loading and unloading. They also both include our bespoke load securing system for safe transport of container grown plants and containerised, rootballed and bare root trees, as well as hedging and forestry transplants.

“The first lorry, a 28-tonne rigid CF 330 FAR 6×2, was purchased in 2017 and the latest is an 18-tonne rigid CF 290 FA 4×2.”

The two new lorries also come with added safety features for the drivers including a lane departure warning system, electronic vehicle stability control system and acoustic reverse warning.

Both vehicles were manufactured by DAF, which has a factory in Leyland, Lancashire. DAF Trucks have been the market leading commercial vehicle manufacturer in the UK for more than 20 years, with roughly one in every three new trucks registered in the UK being a DAF.

The product selection available from Wyevale Nurseries is envied across the industry and the talented team regularly introduces new, award-winning plant varieties.

Its main business is to supply garden centres, landscape contractors, local authorities, foresters and landowners with a comprehensive array of trees, shrubs, hedging, herbaceous and specimen plants.
